Six Spring Branch ISD students have been selected as 2026 National Math Stars, recognizing their exceptional mathematical ability. They were chosen from nearly 9,000 applicants nationwide following a multistage evaluation.
SBISD’s 2026 National Math Stars are:
Tobin Yen, Valley Oaks Elementary School
Sian Gao, Spring Branch Academic Institute
Owen T. Cui, Spring Branch Academic Institute
Dax Patel, Spring Branch Academic Institute
Ella Zhang, Spring Branch Academic Institute
Emily Zhang, Spring Branch Academic Institute
“Having six students recognized as National Math Stars is an incredible celebration of their talent, curiosity and hard work,” said Tracy Scholz. “We are proud of these students and grateful for the teachers and families who continue to challenge, encourage and support them. Opportunities like this allow students to take their learning even further and imagine where their talents might lead.”
Founded in 2023, National Math Stars is a nonprofit that identifies students with extraordinary mathematical ability and supports their growth through high school graduation. Fewer than 7% of applicants are selected.
Over the next 10 years, the six students will have access to individualized support, including advanced math opportunities, mentorship, STEM enrichment, financial assistance for coursework, competitions and summer camps.
This is SBISD’s second year participating in the program. Last year, one SBISD student was named a National Math Star and two were named Pathfinder Stars.
