When sixth grader Bolin Zhang from the Spring Branch Academic Institute (SBAI) stepped onto the stage at the International Academic Competitions (IAC) National Championships in Orlando, he wasn’t just there to compete — he was there to achieve a dream that had been years in the making.
After four years of dedicated participation, Bolin earned the title of National History Bee Champion in the sixth-grade division — a milestone that marked the culmination of countless hours of preparation, curiosity and growth.
A Journey of Academic Discovery
IAC was founded to connect students from around the world through academic competitions in history, science, geography and more. For Bolin, these events became more than contests — they were a chance to deepen his love for learning, explore new topics and challenge himself against top students nationwide.
Over the weekend, Bolin competed in a wide range of events, walking away with an impressive list of honors:
- National History Bee Champion (sixth grade)
- Second place – U.S. History Bee
- Third place – U.S. Military History Exam
- Semifinalist – National Geography Bee
- Semifinalist – Academic Bee
“I’ve dreamed of winning the History Bee for years,” Bolin said. “Last year, I made it to the quarterfinals, and I knew I had more to give. It feels amazing to finally reach this goal.”
His persistence and progress from quarterfinalist to national champion is proof of his growth — and to the power of determination.
Teamwork on the National Stage
Bolin wasn’t alone in Orlando. He joined forces with SBAI classmates Jinu Kang and Austin Wang to compete in the National History Bowl, where the team earned fifth place overall among sixth-grade teams from across the country. Jinu also advanced to the quarterfinals in the National Science Bee, adding to the school’s impressive presence at the event.
A Student Transformed
Bolin’s journey hasn’t just been about medals — it’s been about becoming a more confident learner and teammate. He credits his improvement to the support of his educators and the opportunities provided by SBAI.
“Thank you to Ms. Wood for believing in me and helping me grow,” Bolin said. “This year, I studied harder, asked more questions and learned from every challenge.”
A Program That Prepares Students for the Future
Spring Branch ISD’s commitment to academic enrichment is reflected in SBAI’s support of student participation in national and international competitions. Programs like IAC align with the district’s T-2-4 vision, which ensures students are prepared for a technical certification, military service, or a two- or four-year college degree after graduation.
“This kind of success doesn’t happen by accident,” said Patricia Kassir, SBAI principal. “It takes committed students, supportive families and teachers who encourage curiosity and excellence. Bolin and his teammates have shown what’s possible when all those elements come together.”
For families seeking high-level academic opportunities, SBAI and competitions like IAC offer students a chance to push their boundaries, meet like-minded peers and build skills that will serve them for a lifetime.
As for Bolin?
“I want to keep learning, keep competing and keep having fun,” he said. “This is just the beginning.”
