Demographics Strengths
- Student enrollment growing: SBAI continues to attract students from all over. As a school that serves the needs of highly gifted children, some of our students come from the private school sector, as well as other states. SBAI continues to expand as more families choose the world-class education delivered at SBAI.
- Our special programs align with the needs of our students. As the only public 1st-12th school of its kind, SBAI exists to meet the academic and non-academic needs of highly gifted children. Many families come to SBAI because typical schools do not meet the academic needs of their children.
- Students from various cultures learn and work together. SBAI brings together families from a broad variety of communities. Because of its small size, SBAI very much has a family feel, and the connectedness families have with the school strengthens the overall community.
Problem Statements Identifying Demographics Needs
Problem Statement 1: SBAI is continuing to expand at the elementary level with almost 30% of our students being new this year.
Root Cause: There is a need to lower the cost per student and to meet the needs of all highly gifted learners in the district.
Problem Statement 2: The demographics of SBAI are not representative of SBISD even though we pull students from across the district.
Root Cause: SBISD elementary staff and parents may not be aware of SBAI and the testing process.
Student Achievement
Comprehensive Needs Assessment
Student Achievement
Student Achievement Summary
Spring Branch Academic Institute implements a rigorous curriculum that is aligned to state standards and continuously revised to produce and prepare all students towards T-2-4 district goals. Students will master rigorous academic standards to ensure college and career readiness. We believe campus administrators and teachers are members of the campus’ Professional Learning Committees (PLC). PLC in SBISD is an ongoing collaborative team process used to establish a school-wide culture that develops teacher leadership explicitly focused on building and sustaining school improvement efforts.
A top priority in SBISD is literacy. Students receive the opportunity and skill set to experience meaningful literacy experiences that are rigorous and engaging. With their peers, students in SBISD listen, speak, read and write through the content areas with a commitment that they will become lifelong readers and writers. SBISD is driven by standards, focused on strategies, differentiated, and guided by student data. Numeracy is also a top priority in SBISD. Our goal is to provide academic experiences that build confident and creative mathematical thinkers. Finally, our district core value of “Every Child” is exemplified through campus student support priorities. This includes ensuring that all students have the academic and mental health supports needed to be successful no matter the learning environment (SPED, GT, EB, CTE, etc.).

Student Achievement Strengths
- Elementary, middle, and high school students made gains as measured by the state assessments.
- Our school earned all available distinctions.
- SBAI is highly rated in Niche.com, and continues to attract students from all over the city, state, and country.
- The school continues to expand and the waitlist has been cleared as of August 2025.
Problem Statements Identifying Student Achievement Needs
Problem Statement 1: Many SBAI students perform at the Masters level on STAAR and they must continue to achieve this rating year after year.
Root Cause: SBAI is a school for highly gifted children and each student has the potential for high achievement. Ensuring their academic needs are met so they can maintain the highest level of learning is a challenge.
Problem Statement 2: SBAI admission standards state that all students must be reading at least one grade level above, preferably two. There are a few students that do not meet this requirement.
Root Cause: Some students are emergent bilinguals and learning English simultaneously along with all their other academics. Also, only the IQ score is considered when qualifying students.

Staff Recruitment and Retention Strengths
- Staff members at SBAI are passionate about the education of gifted students. Since this is a school for this very unique population, appreciating them is important.
- The staff members at SBAI regularly receive training specific to working with the gifted and talented population. This allows them to better support their students.
- SBAI has a low turnover rate. Staff members at SBAI are generally happy and stay working at SBAI. The school climate is positive and this contributes to the retention of staff members.
Problem Statements Identifying Staff Recruitment and Retention Needs
Problem Statement 1: This past year, two staff members retired and one left to work closer to home. With a small staff, how do we ensure the climate and culture remains strong and the needs of our highly gifted learners are met?
Root Cause: There are few people trained to work with the highly gifted population and meet their needs along with being experts in their fields.
Problem Statement 2: As SBAI continues to expand, how do we attract the most qualified individuals who are passionate about working with the gifted population?
Root Cause: Many teachers have a very basic understanding of the needs of GT students, much less highly gifted students.
Family and Community Engagement

Family and Community Engagement
Family and Community Engagement Summary
FAMILY ENGAGEMENT
Spring Branch Academic Institute provides a sustained and strategic focus on educating, engaging and empowering families that are aligned with the SBISD Family E3 framework, focusing on building the capacity of families and staff to work together for student academic success. The Share a Smile Customer Service commitments are embedded into the Family E3 expectations, emphasizing the importance of customer service at our campus. The campus Translation and Interpretation Procedure asserts our commitment to provide families with information they can understand. Families are invited to attend campus and district events. The Family E3 team conducts an annual needs assessment with our campus to determine family engagement strengths and areas of support.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Spring Branch Academic Institute works closely with the SBISD Community Engagement Division to support meaningful, strategic two-way engagement of families, community members, partners, and volunteers. The district traditionally has a large and very committed network of partners and 12,000+ volunteers. Spring Branch Academic Institute works with the Community Engagement team to recognize our campus needs, celebrate community engagement strengths, and identify partnership opportunities. We welcome and value partners and volunteers who serve on our campus to support the successes of our students, staff and families.
Family and Community Engagement Strengths
- Engaged families
- Volunteer opportunities
- Career fairs sponsored by parents
Problem Statements Identifying Family and Community Engagement Needs
Problem Statement 1: As our school grows, we want to ensure that all parents feel welcome and engaged. How do we ensure they feel a part of our community even though we are not a neighborhood school?
Root Cause: While there are opportunities to volunteer during the school day, not all parents are available during this time.
Problem Statement 2: While SBAI continues to leverage our parents' expertise throughout curricular learning opportunities, how else can we meaningfully engage our parents' expertise and involvement in our school? How do we ensure that all parents feel welcomed at SBAI?
Root Cause: SBAI parents have many different talents and backgrounds that can be used in the classroom. We may not know all the ways they can be leveraged at school.
